LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.—Agnes Scott Volleyball was unable to steal a victory away from either Maryville or Berea on the opening weekend of USA South Conference play. Maryville ran away with a 3-0 win in the Scotties' first match of the day, but Agnes Scott gave Berea everything they could handle in a three-set loss.
Maryville 3 – 0 Agnes Scott (25-14, 25-11, 25-12)
The Scots, projected as one of the best teams in the conference before the season started, never let Agnes Scott get into any type of rhythm offensively. The Fighting Scots led comfortably throughout, meeting little resistance from the Scotties until the third set when Agnes was able to put together a few mini runs.
Tiara White (Sinton, Texas) led all players with 10 kills in the match and a season-best .222 hitting percentage through three sets. Caroline Irving (Columbus, Ga.) also got in the action with four kills, while still setting up 13 for others.
Maryville hit to the tune of .263 as a team, with many players getting looks at the net. Dejane Hester-Taylor was the top hitter for the Scots with eight kills.
Berea 3 – 0 Agnes Scott (27-25, 25-19, 25-21)
White upped her efforts in the second match of the day for the Scotties, hitting a career-high 21 kills with only four errors. The 21 kills easily surpassed her previous career-best of 13 in a loss to Brewton-Parker on September 18 of this year.
The Scotties had a chance to take the early lead over the Mountaineers, leading by two late. However, two service errors with the set on the line proved to be the turning point for Berea to grab the opening set 27-25.
Agnes Scott outhit Berea .260 to .222 for the match, but the Mountaineers scored 22 points between service aces and service errors in the match to be just far enough ahead to keep the Scotties from making a move to get back into it.
Irving had a career-high 31 assists, while Ahmanie Guillaume also posted a career-high in digs with 19.

The Scotties remain in conference play when Covenant heads to Decatur on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
