DECATUR, Ga.—Brewton-Parker used big rallies in the first and second sets to carry them to a 3-0 sweep of Agnes Scott at Woodruff Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Agnes Scott held firm control of both of the opening sets, but slowed down the stretch to let the visiting Barons sneak in and steal one from them, 32-30, 26-24, 25-16.
The Scotties fall to 0-7 on the season, while Brewton-Parker improves to 2-9.
Agnes' offense was clicking early, racing out to an 8-1 advantage before the Barons could even settle into the flow. The Scotties pushed the lead to double-digits at 15-5 when the trouble started for the home team. Brewton-Parker used a host of Agnes Scott errors to surge back into contention, scoring an 11-1 run to knot things back up at 16 all.
The Scotties responded to reclaim the lead and held set point on four separate occasions, including at 30-29, only to see the Barons take the final three points of the set for a 32-30 win.
Agnes Scott fell victim to a Groundhog Day moment in the second, jumping out to an 18-9 advantage and keeping the Barons offense out of sorts. The Scotties got even closer to a win at 22-14, needing only three points to even the match score when the Barons made their move. Brewton-Parker scored seven consecutive points and 12 of the final 14 overall to shock the Scotties once again, 26-24.
The Barons staved off another Scotties lead at the midway point of the third set. After getting down 13-9, Brewton-Parker went on a huge run to take a slight one-point lead before breaking things open by winning the final eight points of the match to complete the sweep.
Taylor Scarbrough and Grace Hunter paced the Barons' attack with 11 kills apiece, while Marina Dennis assisted 30 kills on the evening. Four different Barons dug up double-digit attacks with Tess Yarbrough leading the way with 19 digs.
Tiara White (Sinton, Texas) had her best match of the season on offense with 13 of Agnes Scott's 24 kills. Caroline Irving (Columbus, Ga.) assisted on 19 of those, while Ahmanie Guillaume (Orlando, Fla.) had a team-high 13 digs. Alex Roquemore (Dallas, Texas) also had a strong outing with six kills, 10 digs and two and a half total blocks.
The Scotties and Barons will meet again a week from now when the Scotties head down to Brewton-Parker for a 7 p.m. start on September 25.
