ATLANTA—Agnes Scott fell in a closely contested three-set match at Oglethorpe University on a rainy Wednesday evening in the metro area. The Scotties fought back after dropping the first set, but Oglethorpe was able to outlast them over the final two sets to claim a 3-0 win. Oglethorpe topped the Scotties 25-19, 25-20, 25-22.
The Scotties jumped out to the 10-7 lead in the first set, but a 5-0 run for the Stormy Petrels gave them the lead for good. Agnes Scott was able to quickly get the sudden disadvantage to one points, but another lengthy offensive outburst spurred the home side to a 25-19 win in the frame.
Agnes Scott was forced to play from behind in the second, but some stellar mid-set play allowed them to go on a big run of its own to put themselves in position to even the match score. The Scotties stormed back from as many as four down in the early going to claim an 18-16 lead approaching the second intermission. The slim advantage would not last for long as another string of Oglethorpe points plagued the Scotties to the tune of a 9-2 finish.
Momentum never seemed on the visitor's side in the final set as Oglethorpe doubled up the Scotties in a race to the first 10 points. A timeout gave Agnes Scott a spark on both ends of the floor, but ultimately the Stormy Petrels were able to defend their home court with just enough juice down the stretch to avoid a Scottie comeback at 25-22.
Morgan Pearson (Pensacola, Fla.) was the leading attacker in what was a relatively quiet night for Agnes Scott. The senior outside hitter finished with seven kills and two service aces to top the team in points with nine. First-year Kalia Jones (Atlanta, Ga.) was not far behind with eight points total coming from six kills, a service ace, and a block.
Bella Kammerer (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) and Makayla Nash (San Francisco, Calif.) paced the team in assists and digs respectively.
Sophomore Jacoby Sims was the standout for the Stormy Petrels with 11 kills and two total blocks at a .259 clip. Emma Williams was often on the other side of those kills, putting up 20 assists.
The Scotties fall to 4-16 this season and will next be in action on Saturday to celebrate Senior Day against Maryville for a noon start. Oglethorpe improves to 5-16 with a home match against Hendrix looming on Saturday.
