Scotties Stretch Win Streak to Four with Shutout over Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Agnes Scott College tennis team stretched their winning streak to four, racing past Guilford College, 9-0.  The Quakers (5-5) had their three-game win streak snapped, as the Scotties (5-4, 2-0 GSAC) notched straight-set wins at positions 2 through 5, and swept the doubles, as well.  Guilford played with 5 players, having to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches.

In the doubles, Anne Rinaldo and Claire Rinaldo returned to the win column with a dominating 8-2 win over the pair of Haley Andrews and Fernanda Gonzalez.  Taylor Lee and Maddie Hoffman also made quick work of their opponents, 8-1, opening a 3-0 lead for the Scotties heading into singles.

"We played much better doubles today than we did yesterday," commented head coach T.J. Greggs.  "I was happy to see us rebound and play well today after some rough patches in the doubles yesterday."

In singles, First-Year Jumana Master made her debut a memorable one, closing out her opponent at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-2.  Hoffman, Anne Rinaldo, and Lee all rolled to straight set wins, but the match of the day was at the top spot, where Claire Rinaldo found herself down 6-3, 4-1 against Andrews.  Rinaldo rallied to take the second set to a tiebreaker, and shut out Andrews in the second set breaker, 7-0.  Since the match had already been decided, a ten-point super tiebreak was played in lieu of a third set.  Andrews once again jumped in front of Rinaldo, winning the first three points and running out to a 6-3 lead before Rinaldo again pulled herself from the brink of defeat, rallying to down her opponent, 10-8, and finish the shutout.

"Claire did such a great job of maintaining her composure today out there," continued Greggs, "she and Anne continue to show why they are such important leaders on this team."

The Scotties will have little time to enjoy their victory, as they finish their three-game North Carolina swing with a 2 p.m. match at William Peace on Monday.
