Hawks Best Scotties 4-1

DECATUR, Ga.—Huntingdon women's soccer scored just a minute in regulation and never let down in a 4-1 win over Agnes Scott College on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks improved to 4-2-1 in USA South Conference play and 5-8-2 overall. Agnes Scott dips to 2-5 and 4-10 respectively amidst a five-match losing streak in conference action.

Huntingdon had just a bit more of an edge from the outset in a game that had major conference tournament implications in terms of seeding. The Hawks' tight loss to Wesleyan over the weekend opened the door for the Scotties to pass Huntingdon in the standings heading into their final conference match—a senior day contest versus bottom-of-the-table Berea on Saturday.

The Hawks immediately put pressure on the Scottie defense with a shot less than a minute in before earning a corner on the subsequent Agnes turnover. Faithe Korpornay (Avon, Conn.) made the Scotties pay with a perfect cross that met the head of an open Allison Fisher (Fort Worth, Texas) just 84 seconds into the game.

Agnes Scott countered right back with some offensive creativity of their own. Nia Coates (Pooler, Ga.) won a one-on-one battle on the right side before chipping an off-balance ball to the center of the six. Myah Johnson (Pepperell, Mass.) met the pass in stride for the easy put away into the right pocket for the equalizer in the 4th minute.

Huntingdon took the lead back eight minutes later when a breakdown in communication left Reilly Feeney (Largo, Fla.) wide open from 30 yards out. Feeney took a look upfield to distribute but launched a long ball instead. The shot went over the outstretched hands of Victoria Cruz (Duncanville, Texas) to put the Hawks up for good.

The Scotties had their fair share of opportunities to climb back into the game, including a pair of point-blank chances for an equalizer in the second half, but fortune was not on their side.

Huntingdon capitalized on a pair of free-kicks in the second half to extend the score out to 4-1, leaving the Scotties scrambling until the final whistle.

Cruz made 12 stops for the Scotties, including two excellent stops on a penalty kick in the first half that kept her team from going down two goals before the break. Huntingdon junior keeper Kylie Kersh played a majority of the game after coming in relief of the starter and did not allow a goal while making six saves.

With the loss, the Scotties still have a big game on Saturday with a postseason bid on the line as Berea comes to town for a 2 p.m. start. The Mountaineers sit a game behind the Scotties at 1-6.
