MACON, Ga.—A furious comeback spurred on by the left foot of senior Brea Hill (Lithonia, Ga.) sent Agnes Scott to its second consecutive USA South victory, a 3-2 result at Wesleyan. The Wolves took a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but Agnes Scott methodically chipped away until Hill sent home the clincher in the 87th minute.
The Scotties improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Wesleyan dips to 2-8-1 and 0-3 respectively.
Wesleyan's Thi Soe (Warner Robins, Ga.) opened the scoring in the seventh minute of regulation with a simple run-on finish on a low cross. Fellow first-year Alyssa Key (Warner Robins, Ga.) drove a ball along the end line that somehow made its way past two Agnes defenders and keeper Victoria Cruz (Duncanville, Texas). Soe was just as surprised, toe-tapping the ball in at the far post for the easy goal.
Agnes Scott controlled the tempo for much of the first half, doubling up the Wolves in shots attempted, but could not find the equalizer before the break.
Panic could have set in at the 52-minute mark when Wesleyan pushed its lead to two goals on a nice finish from Amber McNeal. However, the Scotties had other ideas.
Agnes Scott turned up the temperature a bit over the final third of the game, pressing the Wolves into several mistakes in their defensive end.
The Scotties have been no stranger to the storybook moment this season with several wins coming in late deciding moments. Hill started to write her own hero story with an important answer in the 58th minute. The senior winger followed a shot from Myah Johnson (Pepperell, Mass.) that was initially saved by Carlee Dykes (Powder Springs, Ga.) and fired a clean finish into the twine to halve the Scotties' deficit in a blink.
Agnes Scott's persistence in their offensive third led to another dangerous chance in the 70th minute, again orchestrated by Johnson. The first-year put a touch on net the led to a free ball with Dykes on the ground. No Agnes attacker was within distance to finish it, but a Wesleyan defender accidentally hit the ball off of Dykes' shoulder on a clear to send the ball back into the net for the bizarre equalizer.
Wesleyan made several valiant efforts to get momentum back in their favor, including a pair of scary breakaways that went just wide of frame. The Wolves' inability to finish on those chances left the door open for the Scotties.
Hill took full advantage.
Agnes Scott set up a free kick with six minutes to go. Megan Selecky (Clovis, Calif.) gave her teammates a chance with a ball toward the back post that was popped back toward the center of the six-yard box by Johnson. Hill stood under it and kneed the ball into the left corner of the net for the game-winning goal.
The Scotties outshot Wesleyan 25-15 for the game and forced Dykes into nine saves on the evening.
Agnes Scott gets some much-needed rest for the next eight days before hosting Piedmont on Wednesday October 9.
