Persistence Pays off for Scotties, Todd in 1-0 Triumph

DECATUR, Ga.—Sophomore Val'Dazia Todd's (Warner Robbins, Ga.) first collegiate goal came at the perfect time for the Agnes Scott, aiding the Scotties' efforts in a 1-0 home victory over William Peace. The goal gave Agnes Scott its first win of the season, while William Peace falls to 0-2 on the year.

First-year Victoria Cruz (Duncanville, Texas) had to be kept on her toes in the first minute of regulation by a quick strike from William Peace, but it was knocked away from danger. Cruz would only be forced into making two more saves the remainder of the afternoon as Agnes Scott controlled possession for much of the final 70 minutes.

The heat played a role as the game wore on with both teams relying on fresh legs to keep a counter going. However, once Agnes Scott got into a rhythm in the midfield it was hard for the Pacers to generate any type of resistance back the other way.

The Scotties outshot their opponents 24-7 for the game and 10-3 on frame.

Despite dominating possession for a majority of the first half, Agnes Scott was unable to put away one of its good chances. Two deep attempts nearly resulted in a goal for the Scotties, but William Peace keeper Kasey Wilkins (Clayton, N.C.) was able to get just high enough to punch them over the crossbar.

The Scotties kept the pressure on from the start in the second half as first-year Megan Selecky (Clovis, Calif.) tried a cheeky attempt from the circle to try and catch a new keeper off guard. Selecky's attempt was just off target to keep the game square at zero.

Corner kicks began to pileup for the Scotties in the second half as the ball tended to stay in their offensive half of the field. And eventually their persistence paid off.

Following a quick transition off of William Peace's first shot of the half, Selecky found herself open with the ball just inside Agnes' offensive side. The first-year midfielder took a look up and launched a pass over the top of the defense to find Todd in stride. The Agnes sophomore took a touch before placing a shot to the opposite corner well outside the reach of the Pacer keeper.

The Scotties nearly put another on the board only a few minutes later when Nia Coates (Pooler, Ga.) sent a rope from 25 yards out, but the play was called back on an offside call.

William Peace keeper Abigail Mosteller (East Lincoln, N.C.) took the loss despite making five saves in a half of work.

Agnes Scott remains home tomorrow as a part of its four-game home stand to start the season with Salem College rolling into town fresh off an exciting 5-4 positive result at Covenant on Saturday afternoon. The Scotties and Spirits will get underway at 2 p.m.
