Scotties Win Tiebreaker after Tie at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga.—The fate of the season came down to the flip of a coin for Agnes Scott Women's Soccer after playing to a scoreless draw on a cold October Monday evening. LaGrange and Agnes Scott had their eyes set on a winner-take-all game before 110 minutes of 0-0 ball led to USA South Conference commissioner Dr. Tom Hart flipping a penny to decide who would move on to the conference tournament. Calling heads, the Scotties won two flips to earn a trip to Covenant on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Scotties conclude the 2018 regular season with a 4-10-2 mark overall and a 1-6-1 record in conference play. LaGrange finishes with a near identical record at 4-9-2 and 1-6-1.

Both teams had full control of their destiny entering the night, but neither was able to get enough quality looks to decide the game in full-time. Two 10-minute overtime periods with the golden goa rule was not enough either forcing the season to be decided by chance.

Agnes Scott's offense piled up shots for the third consecutive game, but could not manage to get the ball past the keeper. Following a thrilling 3-2 win over Sewanee on September 18, Agnes Scott has only been able to find the back of the net twice in its final 10 games.

The Scotties will have to find ways to score ahead of their second matchup with Covenant, a team that beat the Scotties 3-0 back in September and has outscored opponents 36-22 for the season.

The winner of the game will head to Salem on Saturday October 27.

Abby Ackerson (Hoover, Ala.) made five saves for the Scotties to notch her third shutout in the last three games.

Agnes Scott outshot the Panthers 17-10 for the game, including registering the only attempt in either overtime period.
