Mountaineers Sink Scotties with Second-Half Tally

BEREA, Ky.—Sophomore keeper Abby Ackerson (Hoover, Ala.) made 16 stops, but it was not enough to keep host Berea from claiming a 1-0 victory over Agnes Scott in USA South women's soccer action. The Mountaineers outpaced the Scotties 28-15 in shots for the game, but needed only one moment when Glendy Pineda scored in the 62nd minute.

Berea claimed the fifth seed in the upcoming USA South postseason with the victory, forcing a winner-take-all match between Agnes Scott and LaGrange on Saturday for the final spot. Both teams enter Monday's game with a win over Wesleyan and six losses in conference play.

Despite putting up 15 shots in the game, Agnes Scott's offensive woes continued to plague them on Saturday. The Scotties hoped to keep things moving in a positive direction after a 1-0 win over Wesleyan just three days ago, but instead struggled to find the back of the net for the seventh time in the last eight games.

The Scotties received two great chances from first-year Val'Dazia Todd (Warner Robins, Ga.) in the fifth minute, but one clanked off the post and the rebound was stopped by keeper Amber Follin.

Agnes Scott remained dangerous for the rest of the first half, while Berea settled for shots from distance.

Enough time remained for an equalizer following Pineda's score, but Agnes was unable to find enough space up top with any consistency. Berea staved off two final efforts in the waning moments to clinch the win.

Agnes Scott (4-10-1) heads to LaGrange on Monday for a 7 p.m. start with the postseason on the line. The winner will play at Covenant on Wednesday afternoon in the No. 3 vs. No. 6 game.
