Final-Minute Goal Stuns Scotties

DECATUR, Ga.—All it took was one moment to decide a back-and-forth affair between Brevard and Agnes Scott in USA South Women's Soccer action on Saturday. The Tornados capitalized on a loose ball in the final minute regulation and subsequently made an outstanding save on a Hail Mary from the Scotties to win the game 1-0.

Senior Megan Shina (Jamestown, N.C.) scored the game-winning goal with under a minute to go in the game. First-year Abbie Petrosky (South Park, Pa.) put an in-between ball on net that forced Agnes keeper Abby Ackerson (Hoover, Ala.) into making a decision. The sophomore came off her line and made the initial save, but the ball squirted from her grasp right to the feet of the oncoming Shina. Brevard's senior forward obliged with an unconventional poke for the momentum-swinging score.

Brevard was the aggressor coming out of the opening whistle, but Agnes Scott quickly evened the momentum. The Tornados led in the shot count 11-3 after the first half, although Agnes Scott's chances proved dangerous each time while Brevard settled for outside attempts.

The Scotties flipped the field in their favor for much of the second half, consistently breaking down Brevard with speed and physicality up top. A couple of open goal chances went wide for the Scotties, allowing the Tornados to stay around looking for their moment.

That moment finally came in the final minute.

The Tornados outshot Agnes Scott 21-12 for the game, but only 10-9 in the second half.

Ackerson made seven saves for the Scotties, while sophomore Hannah Weatherall (Bourg, La.) earned the win with four saves. None bigger than the fingertip save to push Caitlynn Croft's (LaGrange, Ga.) deep attempt over the crossbar in the waning seconds to preserve the win.

The Scotties (3-5-1, 0-2 USA South) are right back at it tomorrow when Maryville comes to town for a 3 p.m. start.
