Late Goal Pushes Cougars Past Scotties

DEMOREST, Ga.—The momentum of a season-first victory on Saturday was not enough to carry Agnes Scott Women's Soccer to back-to-back wins for the first time. Averett scored the only goal of the game in the 81st minute on a counter play that caught the Scotties off guard to register its first win of the year.

For the second Sunday in a row, Agnes Scott found themselves scoreless on a game they dominated on the stat sheet. The Scotties were unable to finish off several key opportunities, including a penalty kick in the 80th minute that would have broken the scoreless tie in their favor. The Cougars used the impressive save on Caitlynn Croft's (LaGrange, Ga.) penalty attempt and quickly turned the tables on the Scotties with the game's only score less than a minute later.

The Scotties held solid advantages in corner kicks (6-2) and shots (12-6), but only held a slim lead in attempts on net (4-3).

However, only one stat mattered at the final buzzer. Averett defender Ashley Ruelo (Tampa, Fla.) scored her first collegiate goal, the eventual game-winner.

Bailee Brown (Salem, Va.) made four saves for the Cougars, but none bigger than on Croft's penalty kick to keep the Scotties off the board. Abby Ackerson (Hoover, Ala.) made two stops for Agnes Scott in the loss.

The Scotties (1-3-1) are off until next Saturday when they host Oglethorpe in the first of three consecutive home matches.
