Scotties Drop Home Contest to Berry College

DECATUR, Ga.—A near triple-double from senior forward Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) was not enough as the Agnes Scott women's basketball team fell to visiting Berry College 75-39 on Friday night at Woodruff Gymnasium. The Scotties fall to 0-5 on the year, while Berry notches its third consecutive win to move to 3-2.

There was plenty to cheer about in the opening quarter for the home crowd as the Scotties came out flying on both sides of the ball. Kalin Smith (Kiln, Miss.) made the team's first three of the game in the opening minute and the Scotties played lockdown defense for the first eight minutes of regulation. The Scotties held a 9-8 lead over the Vikings in the late stages when Madison Wilder (Rome, Ga.) made a layup on the fast break which would ultimately kick start a 19-0 run spanning nearly eight minutes of game time.

Agnes Scott did its best to fight its way to a manageable deficit, trailing only 31-20 at the half before Berry's depth showed up in a big way in the second half. The Vikings put the game away for good with a 23-10 third quarter.

Wilder led all scorers with 18 points in 22 minutes of action, while Madeline Sandman (Jamestown, Tenn.) and Jana Morning (Cartersville, Ga.) each added 13 points in starter's minutes. It was Morning who really broke the game open in the third quarter, making three consecutive triples in the first 90 seconds of the second half to instantly put the Scotties down 20.

Grant finished just three blocks away from the triple-double despite playing only 26 minutes. The senior made five of eight from the charity stripe to finish with 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. Seven blocks was the second-best total of her career, two behind a nine-block performance against North Park last season.

Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) also had finished chances at the free-throw line and got into double-figures with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Agnes Scott heads to Virginia this weekend to take on Hollins College at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
