Bruins Get Past Scotties in Classic Debut

DECATUR, Ga.—A big first-half run powered Bob Jones University to a 71-43 victory over Agnes Scott College in the opener of the 2019 Agnes Scott Tip-Off Classic on Friday night at Woodruff Gymnasium. The Bruins used a 26-8 second quarter thanks to an efficient outing from Kylee Leffew to open up at 26-point lead at the break and did enough to hold the Scotties from making a run in the second half.

Agnes Scott senior Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) had a stat-stuffing evening with nine points, nine rebounds, five steals and four blocks. Classmate Annie Weimerskirch (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) equaled Grant's points outing with nine for the Scotties.

Bob Jones placed three players in double-figures with Leffew leading all players with 15. Gracen Ledford and Jody Bates added 12 and 11 respectively.

The Bruins and Scotties both started slow on the offensive end of the floor, with Bob Jones clinging to a 7-6 lead with under three minutes to play in the first quarter.

However, turnovers started to creep up in bunches on the Scotties, leading to easy points for the Bruins on the other end. The Bruins broke the game up with a 28-6 run over the next 10 minutes of action before settling for a 42-16 halftime lead.

The Scotties settled into the flow of the game in the second half, but the Bruins always seemed to have an answer for a burst from the home side. Each time the Scotties put together a small run, Bob Jones answered with a spurt of its own.

Agnes Scott hosts Sewanee—which fell to Maryville in the nightcap—tomorrow in the 6 p.m. finale of the tournament.
