Tornados Surge Past Scotties 73-49

BREVARD, N.C.—Brevard's offense was white hot from beginning to end to help the Tornados to a comfortable 73-49 victory over Agnes Scott in a USA South Women's Basketball contest on Saturday afternoon. Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) led all scorers with 21 points while notching her fourth consecutive double-double in what has become a dominant January for the junior.

For the better part of 35 minutes, Brevard seemingly could not miss a shot. After Agnes Scott held close in a 17-12 first quarter favoring the Tornados, Brevard pulled away in a big way in the middle 20 minutes of action. Brevard found its groove from the outside in the second quarter, helping the Tornados to a 22-8 effort to take a 39-20 lead by halftime. The Tornados only scored 52 in total in the first matchup in Decatur in December.

The Scotties hoped for a spark coming out of the halftime break, but Brevard scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Agnes Scott (1-21, 1-12 USA South) was bounced from postseason contention with the loss to the Tornados, who currently sit in the final spot for a USA South postseason berth.

Brevard was led by Ty'She Washington, who scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The point guard also had a game-high six steals in the contest. Deja Riddick also had a highly efficient game with 10 points, while making five of six attempts from the floor.

The Tornados finished just below the 50 percent mark from the field but held a percentage above 60 through three quarters.

Grant completed another standout performance with 11 points and three blocks to go with the game-high point total. The forward has raised her average in every major statistical category over the final month and remains one of just four players to average a double-double in the conference.

Kalin Smith (Kiln, Miss.) and Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) each had eight points in starting roles for the Scotties. Deja White (Loganville, Ga.) had seven points in relief.
