Scotties Drop Home Contest versus Covenant

DECATUR, Ga.—Covenant came into Woodruff Gymnasium and took home a 74-47 victory over Agnes Scott College in USA South Women's Basketball play. The Scots used a 21-5 run in the first quarter to keep the Scotties playing from behind for the rest of the afternoon.

Kaley Hallmark (Oklahoma City, Okla.) was the leading scorer in the game with 15 points, while Bekah Walter (Orlando, Fla.) scored another 13 for the Scots. Covenant lived behind the three-point line for much of the afternoon, making nine of 22 attempts for a solid 40.9 mark.

Scottie first-year Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) continued her quietly efficient play with 13 points and three steals to pace the Scotties. Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) put up 11 points but finished just short of a double-double after receiving three quick fouls in the second half. Kalin Smith (Kiln, Miss.) finished a bit under her scoring average with seven points but filled the box score with six assists and six steals in nearly 40 minutes of game time.

It was not Agnes Scott's day coming out of the tip as the Scotties sputtered on offense after an offensive explosion against Wesleyan on Wednesday. On the other side, Covenant seemingly could not miss from anywhere on the floor, making 10-of-16 in the first quarter to take a commanding 16-point advantage.

The Scotties rushed out with a renewed energy in the second quarter, closing the gap to 23-17 with 4:30 to go before halftime. However, that would be the last time the Scotties scored in the period while Covenant scraped together a small 7-0 run to end the half for a 30-17 halftime lead.

After Covenant pushed the lead to 20 at the start of the third quarter, Agnes Scott did its best to keep things within a realistic run. Each time the Scotties put a couple of baskets together consecutively, Covenant would answer with a big shot to turn back the streak.

The Scots took advantage of Scottie foul trouble in the fourth and piled on for a sizeable victory.

Margo Koby (St. Louis, Mo.) added 11 off the bench for the Scots.

Agnes Scott remains on its home court tomorrow afternoon with Huntingdon come to town.
