ATLANTA, Ga.—Emory Women's Basketball (7-2) continued its strong start to the season with an 86-47 non-conference home win over Agnes Scott College on Tuesday evening.
In its final game before the Finals Week break, Agnes Scott did its best to stay within striking distance of a squad looking to get near the top of the UAA standings. Emory started the game with an 11-0 run before Shay Sweat (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was able to get the Scotties on the board with an in-rhythm three ball. The Scotties were able to outscore the Eagles 10-4 over the final four minutes of the opening period to make it a 15-10 game in Emory's favor entering the second.
Long stretches without scoring caused problems for the Scotties in the second quarter as the Eagles scored 17 consecutive points in a four-minute span to make it a 32-10 game. Agnes Scott was never able to claw its way much closer as the visitors only put up four points in the period compared to 24 for the hosts.
Agnes' offense settled in the third quarter with a game-high 17 points only to see Emory keep pace with 23 of its own to bloom the lead over 30 entering the finale.
Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) paced the Scotties offense with 13, but the junior finished with a season-low three rebounds as Emory's height and double-teams proved tough. She did have another solid showing on defense with four deflections.
Kalin Smith (Kiln, Miss.) Briana Holland (Austell, Ga.) and Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) all turned in eight-point performances in starting roles. Deja White (Loganville, Ga.) and Kamiyla Lane (Atlanta, Ga.) both had five rebounds off the bench.
Emory had 14 different players score in the game and were led by senior Ashley Oldshue (Glenville, Ill.), who scored 14. The center reached the 1,000-point plateau for a career in the first half.
Agnes Scott is off until a week from Tuesday, November 18, when they head up to Berry College.
