Tigers Keep Scotties at Bay in Weekend Finale

DECATUR, Ga.—Agnes Scott Women's Basketball fell to Sewanee 59-47 in the finale of the Agnes Scott Tip-Off Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Scotties were unable to shake off a slow start despite strong second-half performances from Kalin Smith (Klin, Miss.) and Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.).

The Scotties now sit a 0-2 following opening weekend in Decatur with a game at regional power Oglethorpe on the docket on Tuesday evening in Atlanta. Sewanee improved to 1-1 after bouncing back from a tight loss to Piedmont on Saturday.

Agnes Scott scored the first five points with Smith getting the home crowd popping after nailing an open three just two and a half minutes into regulation. From there the Scotties went cold over the next 10 minutes of action, leaving the door open for Sewanee to get into a rhythm itself. The Scotties only surrendered two points through the first six minutes and change, but Tiger first-year Kinsley Logan (Lynchburg, Tenn.) put the team on her back over the final three minutes with three consecutive triples. Logan turned it from a 5-2 deficit to a 13-5 lead in mere moments, entering the second quarter.

The Scotties fought back in the second quarter as the shots started to fall, getting within two points at 21-19 before giving up another substantial 9-0 run to the Tigers entering the locker rooms.

Sewanee continued its run with the first four points of the second half and eventually led by as many as 20 at 48-28 near the end of the third. Runs of 15 and 13 in favor of the visitors made it difficult for the Scotties to truly claw their way back into it.

The young Agnes side did anything but quit in the fourth, using a methodical offense to get within three possession with a minute and a half to go. A tenacious defensive effort in the fourth quarter went unrewarded as the Tigers were able to score five quick points off of fouls to put the game out of reach for good.

Logan, who was named to the All-Classic team following the game was the points leader with 21 on 7-of-10 shooting from behind the arch. Senior guard Bella Taylor (Sparta, Tenn.) quietly put up a solid effort with 11 points of her own, while Bella Bombassi (Hixson, Tenn.) added a spark with eight rebounds off the bench for the Tigers.

Smith shot well from deep for the Scotties, finishing with 17 points on five made threes. Grant's busy fourth quarter garnered yet another double-double showing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) also had a nice game in starting minutes for Agnes Scott with seven points and seven rebounds.
