Second Half Rally Falls Short at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga.—A mid-game run pushed the LaGrange Panthers to close 54-47 victory over Agnes Scott in USA South women's basketball action on Tuesday evening. The Panthers turned a close affair into a double-digit lead by halftime and fought off a pesky Scottie squad in the second half to move to 6-5 on the season and 1-2 in the conference. Agnes Scott drops to 1-11 and 0-4 respectively.

The Scotties received another strong game from Garis Grant—16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks—but could not overcome 17 second-chance points for the Panthers.

Agnes held a one-point lead late in the first quarter, which would have given them their first lead over an opponent after one period this season. However, LaGrange turned a pair of turnovers into four points and built out the lead to 12 with a strong offensive second quarter. After holding a slight 14-11 edge after one, LaGrange outscored the Scotties 18-9 in the second for the 32-20 lead.

The Scotties hung tough in the second half, cutting the deficit to two possession several times in the third and fourth quarters, but LaGrange had an answer each time it looked like their lead might slip away from them.

Natasha Banks (Douglasville, Ga.) turned in 12 points to go with two steals. She made three attempts from deep, compared to a 0-12 performance for the Panthers as a squad. Jane Lado (Louisville, Ky.) continued to show a knack for finding the loose ball, finishing with 11 caroms collected.

Marilauren Farr and Lauren Johnson combined for 23 of LaGrange's points on the day.

The most important stat of the day for the Panthers was 18 offensive rebounds that led directly to 17 points. Agnes Scott scored six points off of second-chance opportunities on the evening.

Agnes Scott will conclude a month-long road trip when they head to Brevard on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip. The Scotties are back in Woodruff Gymnasium next Tuesday when they host rival Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
