Scotties Split Season Finale on Senior Day

Scotties Split Season Finale on Senior Day

DECATUR, Ga.—Two potentially big moments brought fans out in droves to Oakhurst Park on Saturday for Agnes Scott Softball's regular-season finale versus Wesleyan—Senior Day and a chance for the program to earn its first postseason berth since joining the USA South Conference. The day was nearly a rousing success after the Scotties won game one 6-3, but Wesleyan battled back with pride on the line to take an 8-2 result in the season finale.

Agnes Scott finishes the season at 6-28 overall and 3-13 in the USA South. The Scotties were tied with Berea College in the West Division standings, but the Mountaineers sweep over Agnes Scott a week ago ultimately proved to be the differential for the final spot. Wesleyan ends the season at 7-21 and 2-14 respectively.

Game One

The Scotties broke open a tie game in the bottom of the sixth inning with RBI singles from Michaela Dailey (Smiths Station, Ala.) and KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) in back-to-back at-bats. Kayla Quesenberry (Inverness, Fla.) put the final touches on an exciting contest with a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give the Scotties a three-run cushion entering the final inning.

Wesleyan started off the scoring with two RBI knocks in the first off the back of Savanna Boyette (Panama City Beach, Fla.) and Yasnei Llavore (Miami, Fla.).

Agnes Scott snapped right back with RBI by Fitzgerald and starting pitcher Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) in the bottom of the first to tie the game.

The Scotties took their first lead with a RBI single from Dailey in the second, only to see the Wolves knot the game back at three in the fourth.

It took until the sixth for the Scottie offense to get back in the flow and Spinks was able to close out the game in the seventh.

Game Two

The finale was all Wesleyan throughout as the Wolves put runs on the board in five of the seven innings. After Agnes Scott held the hit advantage in the opener, Wesleyan started connecting for multi-base hits in big moments to put a big distance between the two sides by the midway point of the game.

With the Wolves up 6-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, Agnes' last really good chance fizzled out with runners stuck on second and third as MacKenzie Hooker (Brunswick, Ga.) was able to pitch out of danger with only a RBI double by Dailey pushing a run across.

Hooker retired the final eight Scotties to come to the plate as Wesleyan extended its lead to 8-2 in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Quick Hits

  • Dailey finished the day 4-of-7 at the dish with three RBI to add to her team high.
  • Fitzgerald also finished on a high note with three hits in six at-bats with two runs drive in.
  • Spinks earned her fourth victory of the season in the circle and finished the year with a 3.78 ERA in 17 starts.

A Senior Farewell

The program said 'See Ya Later' to four softball seniors who've seen the program grow into a new space in their four years. Just two years removed from a tough season, Agnes Scott graduates four student-athletes who saw things through to see remarkable improvements in each of the last two seasons. Thank you for your hard work and commitment Nicole, Kayla, Jordan and Jess.
