MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The trend of Agnes Scott Softball not backing down from a tough opponent continued on Wednesday, but the doubleheader ultimately ended in a pair of close losses to Huntingdon. The Hawks edged the Scotties 3-2 thanks to a late-inning run before holding the Agnes offense to only three hits in a 3-1 game two victory.
Huntingdon entered the day firmly in contention for a top-three seed in the USA South West Division and improved on that standing with an 11-3 mark in conference action. The Hawks are also now 26-12 overall. Agnes Scott still has a bit of work to do entering the final weekend of the regular season at 5-27 and 2-12 in each category.
Game One
The Scotties had no trouble putting runners on base throughout the contest, outhitting Huntingdon 13-9 for the game. However, Agnes Scott left the bases loaded three times in the game, scoring twice on bases-loaded walks in the top of the second inning to tie the score at two after Huntingdon had put two on the board in the first frame.
Caitlynn Caffee, who put the Hawks up 2-0 in the first inning, singled in the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the fifth.
The Scotties nearly knotted the game when Sarah Fox (Cartersville, Ga.), who was 3-for-4, singled a ball up the middle of the diamond. Val Rivas (Nashville, Tenn.), who also posted a three-hit game, rounded third and headed home on the play, but an on-target throw got Rivas sliding into home to keep the Hawks on top.
Kayla Quesenberry (Inverness, Fla.) also had a multi-hit game for the Scotties.
Game Two
Huntingdon followed a similar script in the second game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead over the first two innings thanks to RBI from McKenzie Ridgway and Hannah Vines.
Agnes Scott scored its third run of the day on a Huntingdon error, allowing Tiara White (Sinton, Texas) to scoot home from third base.
Quick Hits
- KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) singled in her first at-bat of the day to extend the hit streak to nine games, but was held without one in game two.
- Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) and Caitlin Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.) combined for 12 innings pitched, four strikeouts and only five earned runs against.
