Scotties Rebound for Series Split with Owls

COLUMBUS, Miss.—For the second consecutive series, Agnes Scott earned a much-needed doubleheader split to notch its fourth win of the season. After dropping game one to the Mississippi University for Women 6-0, Agnes Scott charged back with a 5-2 game two victory.

Agnes Scott improves to 4-22 on the season, while the Owls move to 18-7 overall.

Game One

MUW scored single runs in the first and third innings on sacrifice flies set up by Scottie errors. Agnes Scott's defensive miscues have reared their ugly heads at times this season, but the Scotties have cleaned up their errors in recent series.

While the Scottie offense was held in check—only three hits scattered across seven innings—the Owls added a run on a single in the fifth before really breaking the game open in the bottom of the seventh with a bases-clearing double off the bat of Megan James (Columbus, Miss.) to make it a 6-0 game.

Game Two

Agnes Scott jumped on the Owls early in game two, plating two runs on a pair of wild pitches before even recording an out. Game two starter Nicole Gilkeson (Atlanta, Ga.) singled in the third run of the inning following a one-out double from first-year KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.).

Scoring their first three runs of the day seemed to settle the Scotties as the Owls were not able to get to Gilkeson until the bottom of the fourth. James was the center of the offense once again, hitting a two-run double to knock Gilkeson from the game after the Scottie senior had kept the Owls off the board through three frames.

Caitlin Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.) came in to retire the next three batters in order, stranding the tying run at third base.

The score remained at 3-2 until the top of the seventh when Fitzgerald and Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) hit RBI singles in back to back at-bats.

Spinks relieved Weaver with one out in the seventh and took down the final two batters, including a swinging strikeout to end the game. Despite taking the loss in game one, Spinks earned her first collegiate save. Weaver picked up her second win of the season in relief.

Fitzgerald has three hits in the game to lead the Scotties.

The Scottie hits the second leg of their four-series road trip on Monday with a quick ride down to LaGrange (6-10, 2-6 USA South) for a USA South doubleheader.
