DECATUR, Ga.—A pair of home runs from the heart of the order helped Brevard to a USA South sweep of Agnes Scott College on Saturday afternoon at Oakhurst Park. The Tornados capitalized on Scottie mistakes in an 11-2 game one victory before edging the hosts 5-3 with a homer in the seventh inning in game two.
Agnes Scott falls to 2-18 this season and 0-4 in the USA South. Brevard improves to 10-15 and 4-2 respectively.
Game One
Not much went right for the Scotties in the opener, as they were outscored 11-0 before adding a few inconsequential runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Errors continued to plague the young Agnes side as nine of the 11 runs scored were unearned in part to a season-high five errors committed. Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) was not credited with an earned run against after surrendering two in the second inning. The Scottie starter struck out two in five innings of work.
Emily White (Shelby, N.C.) and Sara Lallier (Lewes, Del.) did the most damage for the Tornadoes with four RBI and four hits combined. Eight different Brevard players recorded a hit and a run batted in during the run-shortened contest.
Micayla McCoy (Sylva, N.C.) recorded the first of what would be two victories on the day with three strikeouts and only two hits against.
Game Two
The Tornados scored three before the Scotties even had a chance to step to the plate, capped off by a deep homer off the bat of White.
Trying to avoid a repeat of game one, Agnes Scott battled back to tie the game by the end of the second inning. Unlike the opener, Agnes Scott was the one to take advantage of Brevard errors. Michaela Dailey (Smiths Station, Ala) singled in a run in the first inning before the Scotties plated two directly off of defensive miscues in the second frame.
Caitlin Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.) made it through seven innings for the first time this year and kept the Tornados quiet after the initial explosion. The sophomore was able to pitch out of bases-loaded jams in the third and fifth innings to keep things knotted while the Scottie offense went quiet.
Brevard put the Scotties in trouble with a well-timed deep ball in the top of the seventh. Mari Cook (Beaufort, S.C.) sent a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field to make it a 5-3 game entering the final half inning.
Unfortunately for the Scotties, nothing materialized down the stretch. McCoy buckled down after surrendering a single to Emma Thomas (Navarre, Fla.) in the bottom of the fourth. The final 10 Scotties to come to the plate were sent down in order.
