Panthers Defend Home Turf from Scotties

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham Southern protected its home field with a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott in non-conference action. The Panthers outlasted the Scotties 7-3 in game one before running away with game two, 9-1.

Agnes Scott first-years Michaela Dailey (Smiths Station, Ala.) and Jani Howington (Lawrenceville, Ga.) combined for seven hits on the day, but it was not enough to overcome the high-powered offense from the Panthers.

Game One

Agnes Scott scored first with Valerie Rivas (Nashville, Tenn.) knocking in a run in the top of the third inning.

After Birmingham Southern answered with one run in the bottom of the third, they scored four in the fifth to break the game open and chase starter Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) from the game. Savannah Lee delivered the crushing blow with a two-out RBI double in the inning.

Howington brought the Scotties back within two with a two-run goner in the top of the sixth, her third of the season.

However, the Panthers scored twice more in the bottom half of the sixth and shut down the Scottie offense in the seventh to preserve the win.

Game Two

The finale was all Panthers from the start, as the home side scored seven runs in the first two frames to put the Scotties in big trouble.

Kayla Quesenberry (Inverness, Fla.) knocked in the only run of the game for the Scotties in the third.
