DECATUR, Ga.—A high-powered offense helped Agnes Scott Softball to a sweep of visiting Sewanee on Saturday afternoon. The Scotties were all over the Tigers in a 10-1 run-rule shortened game one before holding off a late charge from the visitors in game two, 6-4.
Game One
Sewanee scored its lone run of the opener in the top of the first inning with a couple of nice small ball plays cobbled together to score Maggie Willis (Gainesville, Fla.) from first.
Agnes Scott answered right back in the bottom of the inning with Caitlin Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.) aiding with doing damage on the bases. Weaver singled up the middle before stealing both second and third base, allowing her to go home on a Sarah Fox (Cartersville, Ga.) groundout.
The Scotties were back at it in the second with one of their biggest innings in recent program history. Agnes Scott erupted for eight runs on six hits and an error committed by the Tigers. Michaela Dailey (Smiths Station, Ala.) led off the stanza with a looping double to the wall in left-center and Agnes Scott never looked back. Kayleigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) and Jordan Keelser (Trenton, Ga.) each had extra-base RBI knocks to spur on the offense.
Agnes starter Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) settled into a groove after the first inning, striking out three batters while only allowing seven hits in five innings of work.
Game Two
Both teams worked out of jams repeatedly in the earning innings, but the game was only tied 1-1 heading into the fourth inning.
Sewanee loaded the bases with only one out in the fourth, but Agnes Scott starter Weaver was able to get groundouts on back-to-back plays to keep any runs off the board.
The Scotties made the visitors pay by capitalizing on their own rally in the bottom of the fourth. After an error allowed the leadoff hitter to get on base, Ashley Mabrey (Mt. Dora, Fla.) and Jessica Costero (Miami, Florida) drove in runs in consecutive at-bats to make it a 3-1 game. Dailey drove in her third run of the day later in the inning on a groundout for a three-run lead.
Agnes Scott cushioned its advantage in the fifth with singles from Emma Thomas (Navarre, Fla.) and Young to plate two more.
Sewanee staged some late-inning chaos in the bottom of the seventh when Taylor Wagner (Clermont, Fla.) doubled to score a runner from second. The Tigers found a bounce of Agnes misfortune when the possible game-ending throw squirted away to score two more runs and brought up the potential game-tying run.
Agnes senior Nicole Gilkeson (Atlanta, Ga.) earned her second career save by getting the final Tiger to pop to short for a 6-4 final.
All About the Numbers
- Rachel Hoffman (Easton, Pa.) was the top hitter for the Tigers, going 4-of-7 from the dish with an RBI.
- Costero was the hit leader for the Scotties with four in five at-bats while scoring a team-high three runs on the day.
- Dailey and Howington combined for five of Agnes' 13 RBIs on the afternoon.
- Spinks earned her first collegiate win after pitching well in a pair of tight losses to start the season.
- Agnes Scott stole seven bases during the doubleheader, six of which came in game one.
- The Scotties have now won seven consecutive games against the Tigers and swept them in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.

Agnes Scott (2-4) is right back on the field on Sunday when they host LaGrange for a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon. Sewanee's home openers will have to wait until Wednesday when they host Covenant beginning at 2 CST.
