Scotties Ready to Tackle 2019 Softball Schedule

ROME, Ga.—Agnes Scott Softball will have a bit of a chip on its shoulder entering the 2019 season after being voted ninth in the USA South West Division in the league's preseason poll as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

Each divisional preseason poll only includes votes from coaches within that particular division-only. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

The Scotties took a step forward in 2018 and will look to do so again after returning a majority of its core to the 2019 squad. Sophomore Tiara White (Sinton, Texas) made a conference divisional team a season ago after leading the team with 34 hits and a .337 batting average. The utility player was also a menace on the base path with a team-high 17 steals, which ranked her among the elite base stealers in the USA South.

Junior Alexei Young (McDonough, Ga.) also returns to patrol the outfield for the third consecutive season with hopes of maintaining a career average north of .300. The center fielder finished second on the team in hits (31) and steals (12) in 2018.

Sophomore Caitlin Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.) was a workhorse in the circle for the Scotties as a first-year, posting a 4.43 ERA with two wins to her credit. She should expect more help this year with a plethora of new faces ready to eat up innings for the Scotties.

The Scotties also add nine new student-athletes to an already stable core, many of whom will be looked to for contributions from the start.

Maryville garnered eight of the nine possible first-place votes from the West coaches, while Piedmont took one vote. Covenant, Huntingdon, and LaGrange settled in the remaining spots inside the top five. Maryville won the conference tournament in 2018 before pulling off two upsets of host Emory in the national tournament.

Agnes Scott makes its 2019 debut on Sunday when they host Brenau for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
