DECATUR, Ga.—The Piedmont Lions were a hard team to slow down on Wednesday as they took a USA South doubleheader with Agnes Scott College at Oakhurst Park. Piedmont racked up 26 runs on 32 hits to beat the Scotties 13-1 and 13-4 to sweep the season series.
The Scotties (3-17, 0-6) head to Covenant on Saturday for another conference doubleheader before heading home on Sunday for the Lauren Giddings Memorial Games against Berea. Piedmont improves to 15-11 overall, but more importantly stays unbeaten in USA South play.
Game One
Piedmont scored two unearned runs on a pair of errors in the second inning, but Agnes Scott was able to halve the deficit in the third when Cecilia Siegel (Plantation, Fla.) hit a deep fly ball to score Kendra Tanner (Blairsville, Ga.) from third.
It was all Lions from there as they outscored the Scotties 11-0 over the final three innings to take the game going away. Mariann Kennison was a thorn in the side of Agnes Scott all evening as the junior posted three hits in both contests, including two homers in the opener.
Four other Lions had at least two hits.
Game Two
Piedmont continued where they left off in game two, putting six runs on the board in the top of the first. Jessica Bagwell got in on the deep ball with a three-run jack to highlight the inning for the Lions.
Agnes Scott showed some signs of life in the third with back-to-back extra-base hits from Tanner and Jordan Keesler (Trenton, Ga.). Siegel also had an RBI knock in the frame to make it a 6-2 game.
Again, Piedmont seemed to keep getting stronger as the game progressed, turning a four-run lead into a 10-run advantage by the middle of the sixth.
The Scotties attempted to prolong the game with a nice rally in the sixth, but Piedmont's game one starter Melissa Eckman came in to close the door for good.
Junior Kayla Quesenberry (Inverness, Fla.) had a solo shot in the sixth inning, Agnes' first round-tripper of the year.
Madison Whiteside and Eckman picked up the two wins for Piedmont on the day.
Haley Hixon and Josie Coker combined to go 8-of-9 at the dish for the Lions, while Quesenberry and Tanner both contributed multi-hit games for the home team.
