Brevard Dominates Agnes Scott for First Win of Season

BREVARD, N.C. – Senior forward Destiny Williams poured in 20 points to lead the Brevard College women’s basketball team (1-2, 1-2 USAS) to its first victory of the 2020-21 season, as the Tornados cruised to an 86-32 victory over Agnes Scott College (0-9, 0-9 USAS) on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

A total of 13 Tornados tallied points in Brevard’s home debut to help claim the decisive victory. Williams, a senior from Aiken, South Carolina, tallied 20 points on a very efficient 7-of-8 shooting from the field, adding a made 3-pointer and five free throws into the mix. Williams hauled in seven boards in addition to three assists and a game-high four steals. Tuesday’s effort marked the third time that Williams has tallied 20 points or more in her BC career.

Freshman guard Kaitlyn Light set a new career mark with 14 points, including four made 3-pointers, while Melvia Seymore dropped 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Deja Riddick (nine rebounds), Avery Lockwood (seven rebounds), and Chyna Pouncey (six rebounds) aided a dominant 55-27 advantage on the boards for the Tornados. BC totaled 45 bench points, including the first career collegiate buckets for Kaitlin Blanton, Cassie Plemmons, and Whitney Thompson. The Tornados were also able to capitalize on the 29 turnovers that they forced, converting them into 35 points-off-turnovers.

Brevard came out of the gate hot, outscoring the visiting Scotties 20-4 in the first period behind five made 3-pointers. The Tornados nearly doubled their advantage in the second quarter, taking a 42-14 lead into the intermission. BC utilized a quick 9-2 scoring stretch capped off with a Williams fast-break layup at the 5:49 mark to outscore Agnes Scott 25-9, extending its commanding lead to a 44-point margin, 67-23, with one quarter remaining. Brevard capped off its dominant victory by outscoring the Scotties by 10 points in the final stanza, securing the first win of the season, 86-32.

The Tornados are scheduled to host nationally-ranked #15 Maryville College (6-0, 6-0 USAS) at the Boshamer Gymnasium for a USA South Conference doubleheader. Brevard and Maryville tip-off at 7 p.m. on Friday before concluding the weekend set at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The contests will be broadcast free-of-charge at youtube.com/ BrevardCollegeTornados.
